iPhone 2.2 Wishlist
Five things I wish had been included in the recent iPhone 2.2 update (and really, in the original release of the iPhone 3G).
- A2DP (bluetooth headphone) Support
- MMS Picture messaging
- Landscape text entry in Mail
- The ability to forward SMS messages
- OBEX File transfer for photos
The first point (A2DP support) just makes a great deal of sense to me. Especially in the perfect, ‘clutter free’ world which Apple has positioned itself. Why should we have to have wired headphones when wireless ones exist? I suppose one problem is potentially the lack of microphone on these, but then is this any different from using any other non-iPhone headphones? On a personal note this annoys me as my car stereo supports bluetooth headphones, and on my previous phone I could pair-up and listen to my MP3’s without having a cable across my dash
MMS messaging, to be honest, isn’t something I’m greatly missing; I didn’t use to send hundreds of multi-media messages. However the ‘you can just email it’ attitude I feel is a bit of a cop-out. I can’t see it taking them a huge amount of time to implement MMS and it seems that it is lacking a major selling point of most of the iPhone’s competitors. After all, there is nothing like sending your mates a picture of you sunning yourself on the beach whilst they’re stuck at work now, is there?
A biggie for those of use with fat fingers! When using Safari in ‘landscape mode’, you get a slightly larger keyboard for inputting text, such as in the address bar. When it comes to writing email however, you’re restricted to the normal portrait keyboard, which is a little cramped if you’re writing any substantial amount of text.
I’m not a huge fan of passing on messages, but on the rare occasion someone sends me a truly hilarious txt, or perhaps when organising an event with many people, it would be nice to be able to forward SMS, rather than having to re-type them as a new message.
On the subject of the last point, I understand the issues with transferring music, though the Microsoft Zune has an interesting approach to this, allowing wireless transfer of music, but attaching a 3 days / 3 plays DRM to it.
Not to sound ungrateful, receiving podcasts over the air is an excellent improvement. As is the speed increase for SMS. If you have a large message history with someone, it’s now kind of paginated. The last two weeks are loaded, and when you scroll up to the top a ‘Load Earlier Messages’ button is now present. Clicking it (obviously) loads previous messages, and you can repeat this process to view back in time as far as the message history allows.
In the mean time, here’s hoping for the 2.3 Software Update!
